Cheadle Hall Construction Projects - Replace Cooling Generating Systems, Replace Generator, Replace Terminal and Package Units

Update - Upcoming Crane Activity on Thursday, September 17, from 6:00am to 4:00pm

For public safety, all work areas will be clearly delineated and controlled throughout the activity. The contractor will also have staff on site to coordinate pedestrian and vehicle traffic and help maintain safe access around the work area.

IMPORTANT ACCESS INFORMATION:
The main doors to Cheadle Hall will NOT be accessible during the crane activity. Please plan to enter and exit the building using the WEST DOORS.

We encourage everyone who will be accessing Cheadle Hall during this time to plan accordingly and allow additional time for navigating around the controlled work areas.

Update - Upcoming Electrical Shutdown - 8/15 6:00am - 5:00pm

On Saturday, August 15, from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., there will be a scheduled electrical shutdown to support the construction projects at Cheadle Hall.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will make every effort to restore power and re-energize the electrical panels before 5:00 p.m.

Friday - Fan restoration in basement

Work will include minor demolition, partial HVAC shutdowns, and cleaning. Impacts include possible interruptions to the ventilation systems and odors. All products to be used meet the UCSB required specifications as non-toxic.

Scheduled - The Cheadle HVAC upgrade project is informing Cheadle Hall building occupants that the air conditioning system is currently under reconstruction, and not in operation at this time. Every effort is being made to expedite the work, which when complete will provide improved performance and efficiency; however, for the next several months the system will be down. With an approaching heat event, people are cautioned to take measures to ensure their safety and comfort, including appropriate dress, use of fans, and intake of water. We apologize for the inconvenience!

Identified - In anticipation of future development of the East Campus Student Housing Project, please note that a single lane for a portion of UCEN Rd will be closed to the public from 6 AM to 8 AM on Tuesday, June 16th, 2026. The map linked below will be updated to reflect this shortly.

Chilled Water Loop - Comfort Cooling Curtailment Enacted

Monitoring - Facilities Management is issuing this notice to inform the campus community in buildings served by the central chilled water system about how cooling responds during periods of extreme heat and peak demand.

The campus chilled water loop has a finite cooling capacity. When demand on the loop exceeds that capacity - typically during hot weather or periods of heavy campus-wide use - Facilities Management curtails comfort cooling to buildings in order to keep critical systems supporting research operational.

When this happens, affected buildings may experience warmer indoor temperatures than usual. This is expected and temporary. Comfort cooling is restored to normal levels as soon as demand on the loop drops back within capacity. The affected buildings for this curtailment event are as follows:

221 – Student Resource Building (SRB)
223 – Theater & Dance West
243 – Intercollegiate Athletics Building (ICA)
275 – Education
276 – Social Sciences and Media Studies (SSMS)
277 – Pollock Theater
505 – Events Center
515 – Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)
517 – Mosher Alumni House
521 – Bren Hall
525 – UCSB Library

535 – North Hall

Facilities Management Preventative Maintenance staff will be performing scheduled maintenance work on the building’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This work will include inspection and replacement of air filtration media and fan motor belts, lubrication of motors, and inspection/repair of associated ventilation and heating and cooling systems. Please note the following schedule.
